6.1.1 Factors in the Industrial Revolution
When historians reflect on the great industrial leaders of the Gilded Age, 1877-1900, generally they reflect on John D. Rockefeller or Andrew Carnegie (pictured left). These two Captains of Industry (pro) or Robber Barons (con) altered the economic system by presenting capitalism with the materials and structure required to reach its apex. By developing their corporations around oil and steel respectively, these two magnates were able to allow the United States to become the industrial might that in conjunction with the Spanish-American War resulted in the U.S. adopting the position as a world power. Other vital individuals during this period of industrialization were Henry Bessemer, J.P. Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Mellon, and the Astor Family.
