VOCABULARY
Many students find the textbook, America: Pathways to the Present, quite challenging in regard to its vocabulary. Thus, I have created vocabulary lists for each chapter that can help the parent or guardian to assist their student in my class. You, the parent or guardian, can simply talk through the words and present them with examples of how it is used correctly. Since some of the vocabulary is "historically" specific, perhaps you and your student could find it within the chapter and talk about the context clues and how it is being used.
If students have any difficulty with vocabulary or terms, I encourage them to bring their questions to initiate the next class period. The student simply needs to either write the term on the board or raise their hand at any time and insert their question into the lesson. This will allow the student to participate in the creation of the criterea and standards that will be used to assess student learning. The instructor will be flexible and responsive to the students' desire to take the lesson in another direction.
Also, although your student has been informed, I find it helpful if you emphasize to them that the vocabulary will be used when creating assessments. This makes the vocabulary more meaningful and implements Bloom's Taxonomy level of application.
