CHAPTER 15
This is a photo of Langston Hughes, probably the most famous writer of the Harlem Renaissance. His quote, "Harlem was in vogue," is frequently used to refer to the period of tremendous artistic, musical, and literary expression. Although Hughes was often viewed as the leader, he was joined by Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McCay, Alain Locke, and Countee Cullen. Below is a famous work by Hughes:
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I danced in the Nile when I was old
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln
went down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy
bosom turn all golden in the sunset. “ ” from "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" (1920),
Alain Locke, author of the New Negro, created the term "African American" within his work. Through these various writers, Harlem experienced a rebirth, Renaissance, that led to various forms of expression. Within music, the leaders were the pianist Duke Ellington and Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong were the leaders of jazz, which became the foundation of the spirited Twenties.
