CHAPTER 12 HELP
Here is the man, Alfred Thayer Mahan. He composed The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783. Remember, the dates are significant because they related directly to American history. The issuance of the first Navagation Acts were in 1660 and the Revolutionary War concluded in 1783. Thus, one of the greatest periods of imperialism during the 17th and 18th centuries involved the dominance of the British over the American colonists. Mahan hoped that America would follow the standard established by the British and would form a great steel-hulled navy that would protect American economic interests throughout the world. In response, due to the support of numerous lobbyists, Congress issued laws that permitted increased military expenditures (i.e., the nine capital vessels that included the U.S.S. Maine.
