SNOWBALL ESSAY
As soon as you get over what people think, you can have a nice time.
--Lara Flynn Boyle
Analyze this statement by Boyle and apply it to Full Metal Jacket. Take a position on whether it is correct or false; then, use data from the movie to prove the argument.
OR
· You may produce a one-page (typed, 11 pica, 1.5 spaces, one-inch margins, name and date in upper right-hand margin) opinion piece on the movie’s quotes.
· You need to relate each quote to the movie’s principle motifs (mindset, humor, honor, manipulation).
· You will compose four paragraphs with a topic sentence, three to eight sentences that support the topic in the body of the paragraph, and a transition.
· Do not type the quotes; rather, reference them as quote 1, 2, 3 and 4.
1. Pvt. Joker: Are those live rounds Leonard?
Pvt. Pyle: 7.62 millimeter. Full metal jacket.
2. Pvt. Joker: How can you shoot innocent women and children like that?
Helicopter gunner: It's easy. You just don't lead them as much. You see, anyone that runs, is V.C. Anyone that stands still is well disciplined V.C. Ain't war hell?
3. Crazy Earl: These are great days we're living, bros. We are jolly green giants, walking the Earth with guns. These people we wasted here today are the finest human beings we will ever know. After we rotate back to the world, we're gonna miss not having anyone around that's worth shooting.
4. Lt. Lockhart: [reading] ... we have a new directive from M.A.F. on this. In the future, in place of "search and destroy," substitute the phrase "sweep and clear." Got it?
Private Joker: Got it. Very catchy.
Due Date: Tuesday, December 13th at the completion of class.
