THE DAILY BLOG
Monday, 11.07.11
Today, the students took their Chapter 14 Quiz. This week, which has an odd schedule due to parent/teacher conferences, will serve as a review week for the students. As usual, they will receive a review sheet that has the bulk of the unit test on it. The student needs to record as much information on each term as possible. Once again, special attention should be given to cause/effect. As a parent/guardian, I would appreciate your help by formulating a plan of how many terms need to be completed each day and a solid study plan that will allow them to peak on test day, Monday, 11.14.11.
During the week, they will have the choice of either watching a movie, Iron-Jawed Angels, or using the class period to work on their review sheet. The film will do a nice job of reviewing 6.3.3, which is Women's Suffrage. According to the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC), the student must be able to analyze the successes and failures of efforts to expand women's rights, including the work of important leaders and the eventual ratification of the 19th Amendment.
When a student works with the review sheet, they should be completing approximately 20 terms a day. If they do this throughout the week, that will allow them to use the entire weekend simply for studying rather than organizing. Since many of the terms are names, the student will approach the cause/effect differently. I showed them how it should be done properly by using various terms from Chapter 14.
Tuesday, 11.08.11
Students received their overall grades and the numbers from yesterday's quiz. The students did better on this quiz than any this year. We are definitely seeing improvement and not perfection, which is my goal.
In class today, the students had the opportunity to either watch Iron-Jawed Angels or to work on their review materials.
Regarding tonight, please make sure your student has at least 12 to 15 terms completed from their review worksheet. They should be creating materials that can be used this weekend during their study push. As usual, I will be placing some help on the website. Also, I will have a study group on Monday, 11.14.11, at 6:30 AM sharp! Please encourage your student to attend. If a ride is an issue, encourage them to seek to carpool with someone that lives near them, especially those that reside closer to Battle Creek.
Key terms to discuss with your student tonight: Henry Cabot Lodge, Richard Olney, Hiram Johnson, Julette Low, and James Blaine. We did not discuss these in class; however, they need to review them. Once again, place a premium on cause/effect. What brought the individual into the national spotlight? What was the result of their being in the spotlight?

We began class by viewing two of the terms from their review sheet on the web site. These two terms, James Blaine and Henry Cabot Lodge, have links, which is why they are green. When they hit the link, they will be exposed to a prompt, which is practice for the MME, Michigan Merit Exam. Then, the students receive an example of what they should be doing for their review. The focus is on cause/effect and particular facts from their text. If they have difficulties with this worksheet Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, they may email me and receive additional guidance. I might be available on Sunday, but I can't assure that. The Unit 2 Test, which consists of Chapters 12, 13, and 14, will be administered on Monday, 11.14.11. There will be a study group in my room, B-214, at 6:30 AM on Monday. Since the doors are electronic, I can't block them open. Hence, I will be available at the front doors from 6:25 to 6:30. After that, they will have to wait for the custodian to open them at 7:00. Students may bring breakfast with them.
