Students were presented with four terms: The Man Nobody Knows, Buying on Margin, Installment Buying, and Welfare Capitalism. They selected which terms they sought additional discussion, especially related to cause and effect. Please discuss these terms with your student tonight to ensure they have complete understanding. If we did not discuss it in class, have them find it in the book and summarize the supportive material to the term.
As mentioned previously, I strongly believe that your student's education takes active roles by the teacher, the student, and the parent/guardian. Here is a link to an interesting article that focuses on the role of the parent. Simply click on the link and enjoy the article. Fortunately, at Hastings, we have numerous parents that do care and are actively involved in their student's education. Thanks! http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/opinion/sunday/friedman-how-about-better-parents.html?emc=eta1
Homework: Complete questions for Section 3 of Chapter 16.
Wednesday, 11.30.11
Snow Day~! Students should still complete the work due for today and have Section 4 of Chapter 16 for tomorrow.
Thursday, 12.01.11
Students will be watching and discussing a film that focuses on the Scottsboro Boys during the Great Depression in Alabama. Once again, students should be aware of cause and effect, which the parent/guardian can reinforce by discussing the film with their student.
There will be some major study sessions approaching that I would encourage your student to attend. These are being offered in lieu of so much help on the website.
1) Monday, 12.05.11 @ 7:00 AM This will be a short study session to assist students in their preparation for the Chapter 16 Quiz. They may bring breakfast to the session.
2) Monday, 12. 12. 11 @ 6:30 AM This study session, a little longer than the previous, will focus on the most difficult chapter of the year, 17. Chapter 17 focuses on the various New Deal programs that were instituted in the Thirties. The student will need to be at school between 6:20 and 6:30 AM. Once again, they may bring breakfast.
3) Wednesday, 12.14.11 @ 5:30 AM This early time was selected by the vast majority of the students from all four hours. We have a Unit Test that day, which covers Chapters 15, 16, and 17. Based on the last test study group, we were able to thoroughly review half the test when we began at 6:30; thus, the extra hour should make a huge difference. Students will have to report to the school between 5:20 and 5:30 AM. Once again, they may bring breakfast.
Friday, 12.02.11
Students will complete the film on the Scottsboro Boys and discuss the most important elements. If time allows, there will be a question and answer session regarding the quiz for Monday; thus, please encourage your student to come with questions regarding their text and Chapter 16 for that day.
