The students took the Chapter 17 Quiz today, which covers the New Deal. Although this is the most challenging quiz of the year, several students did quite well. Remember, if your students performs lower than a 60%, they can retake the quiz during ASP on Thursday this week for a higher grade. They have the opportunity to review the quiz on Tuesday, 12.13.11, and see what they missed. The same exact quiz is presented on Thursday. This has been the practice for all the quizzes and tests the entire semester; hence, no student should have lower than a 60% average for their assessments.
There were 19 students that attended the study session this morning. In addition, there were six to ten students from Mr. Andy Keller's history class. As usual, the study session has a tremendous impact:
A: 9
B: 6
C: 3
D: 0
F: 0

Today, we began the moving Cinderella Man. This film is an excellent lesson supporting 7.1.2 of the MMC, Michigan Merit Curriculum.
7.1.2 Explain and evaluate the multiple causes and consequences of the Great Depression by analyzing the economic and social toll of the Great Depression, including unemployment and environmental conditions that affected farmers, industrial workers, and families.
Please discuss with your student what it was like for mothers and fathers during the Great Depression. What type of adversity did they face? How was the role of adults altered from the Twenties to the Thirties?

We had the unit test today on Chapters 15, 16, and 17. This is by far the most challenging unit test of the year since it heavily emphasizes the New Deal, which is very technical and includes a heavy dose of economic history. Although we had a 5:30 AM study session, we had our largest group of the year. I am very proud of all of them for sacrificing sleep for the benefit of their grade. For those that were unable to attend, I appreciate the extra efforts they placed too. Also, thank-you to all the parents/guardians that had to awake and bring your student early to school. Here is how the study session students performed:
A: 18
B: 8
C: 3
D: 0
F: 0
Thursday, 12.15.11
Students continued the film Cinderella Man. In this portion, they saw the main character, Jim Braddock, receive an opportunity to work on the docks and to have one final payday. Discuss with them how waiting to be selected for a job is similar to the anxiety people face today when searching for work. How do they believe it could be improved then or now?
Friday, 12.16.11
Students continued the film Cinderella Man. In this portion, students were able to see James Braddock have a shot at a professional career again and a shot at the title. Please discuss with your student second chances. What did Braddock do to prepare himself for that second opportunity? How is Braddock's life an example for us today?
Wishing you and yours a happy holiday!
