CHAPTER 12 HELP
Upton Sinclair, one of the most famous Muckrakers in American history, composed The Jungle in 1906. This novel, which was meant to argue that socialism, rather than capitalism, should be the preferred economic system in America, missed its target by exposing the unhealthy conditions in the meatpacking industry rather than its intended target. Sinclair famously said, "I aimed for the public's heart , and by accident I hit it in the stomach."
Sinclair's work, which was openly received by President Theodore Roosevelt, a survivor of the "embalmed beef" of the Spanish-American War, would lead to reform in the nation's "corrupt and filthy canneries." TR would sign into law the Meat Inspection Act in 1906, which authorized the Secretary of Agriculture inspections and rating of various meat products.
