NEW DEAL
This political cartoon focuses on FDR's attempt to pack the Supreme Court after it began overturning New Deal legislation. Bolstered by his landslide victory in his first reelection bid in 1936, FDR believed he had a mandate from the people supporting his alphabet programs, which meant that the Supreme Court's attempts to destroy his New Deal must be nullified. Under his proposal, the Court would encourage all members over the age of 70 to retire. If they remained, the Court would be expanded by one Justice for each one over the age of 70. FDR sold this idea by stating that he was attempting to reduce the workload of such elderly men. In reality, he wanted to ensure he always had a majority to support his New Deal vision. Unfortunately for FDR, he had overplayed his mandate and was challenged by venerable people like Michigan's Senator Arthur Vandenberg, who resided in Grand Rapids when not serving in Washington D.C. Hence, FDR's proposal, known as the Court Packing Plan, was viewed as a threat to the separation of powers and was easily defeated, which cost him some political power and support of the populace.
